What is African Swine Fever and why is it dangerous?

African Swine Fever (ASF) is a devastating and highly contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs worldwide. The disease is responsible for massive losses in pig populations and has become a major crisis in the pork industry in the recent years. How does African Swine Fever spread?

ASF spreads easily through both direct contact with infected pigs, and indirect contact.

Pigs can become infected by the flu through several routes:

• Direct contact with infected pigs, including contact with blood, saliva,
• Contaminated materials (formites), premises, vehicles, clothes
• Environmental contamination, pens, manure, carcasses, water
• Biological vectors, soft ticks of the genus Omithodoros
• Swill feeding (feeding food waste to pigs)
• Contaminated feed and water
